1 Large English Cucumber or 2-3 Persian Cucumbers
4 cloves of Garlic, finely minced
1 Fresh Red Chili (or Thai bird's eye chili), chopped
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Sugar
1/2 tsp Thirteen-Spice powder (optional, but gives that authentic touch!)
1.5 tbsp Light Soy Sauce
2 tbsp Chinese Black Vinegar (or rice vinegar)
💡 Vinegar Substitutes: If you don't have Chinese vinegar, Apple Cider Vinegar works beautifully! No vinegar at all? Just squeeze the juice of half a fresh Lemon instead!
1.5 tbsp Cooking Oil (for sizzling)

Step 1: Choose Your Way to SMASH! 🔨
There are two fun ways to do this depending on your kitchen tools:
Method A (The Traditional Way): Lay the cucumber flat on your cutting board. Use the flat side of a traditional Chinese chef’s knife to smash down firmly along the entire length until it cracks open.
Method B (The No-Knife/Mess-Free Hack): Place the cucumber inside a clean ziplock bag or food bag. Grab a rolling pin, a wooden mallet, or any sturdy stick, and whack the cucumber until it breaks apart. This keeps your kitchen perfectly clean!
Step 2: Slice & Salt 🔪
Slice the smashed cucumber diagonally into bite-sized pieces. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
Step 3: Mix the Seasoning 🥣
In a small heatproof bowl, combine the salt, sugar, thirteen-spice powder, light soy sauce, and your choice of vinegar (or lemon juice). Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Step 4: Sizzle the Aromatics 🌶️🔥
